         Beto Vianna earned his doctoral degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, masters from the University of Southern Mississippi, and his bachelor’s in popular music from UNICAMP in Brazil. Throughout his career, he has performed in important Brazilian orchestras such as the Ribeirão Preto Symphony, Campinas Symphony, Sinfonia Cultura Broadcast Orchestra, University of São Paulo Symphony, among others. In the United States, he was the bassist of orchestras such as Gulf Coast Symphony, Meridian Symphony, Sinfonia Gulf Coast, Urban Concert, Champaign-Urbana Symphony, including a variety of ensembles from baroque to contemporary music and jazz.

          In 2000, together with Thibault Delor, he was one of the founders of Tropical Double Bass Orchestra, working as bassist, arranger, and composer. In 2005, he recorded the CD with works of the composer Ernest Mahle as a guest of the UNICAMP Youth Orchestra. In 2006, he began his master's degree with Dr. Marcos Machado, a period where he also served as conductor and director of the USM Jazz Lab II USM and bassist of the Jazz Sextet directed by saxophonist Larry Panella.

          In 2007, Beto received the Outstanding Soloist award from the Seventh North Texas Jazz Festival. He has performed in many jazz festivals in the United States sharing the stage with musicians as Esperanza Spalding, John Clark, and Larry Panella.

          Among concerts and recitals emphasizing the repertoire for solo bass, are included the Chicago Bass Festival in 2010 where he performed with his professor Michael Cameron and concert with the U I New Music Ensemble in a world premiere of a piece entitled Tangents for 10 soloists by the composer Yao Chen. In 2012, he was the double bass professor of the Summer Festival at the University of Illinois.

          Thanks to his interest of the musical diversity and academic research involving the double bass, Beto Vianna has been dedicated to teach and perform emphasizing its versatility in different musical genres. His teaching philosophy is based on an organic process of learning which can develop the student’s musical skills through a conscious practice in accordance to their musical goals.
